Snake Strike gives the target the First Strike ability.

This is particularly useful on melee creatures. Griffins, with their unlimited retaliation ability, are an ideal choice. This spell or its more powerful cousin Mass Snake Strike, can improve the survivability of your high level melee creatures, particularly when fighting low level creatures where a priority attack can mean the difference between losing a creature or two or coming away with no casualties.
Like the special ability, First Strike is negated by the negate first strike ability.
