  2. Advanced
  3. Expert (most powerful)

In Heroes II, all skills are unrelated.

Heroes III[]

  1. Basic (least powerful)
  2. Advanced
  3. Expert (most powerful)

In Heroes III, all skills are unrelated.

Heroes IV[]

There are 5 skill levels in Heroes IV:

  1. Basic (least powerful)
  2. Advanced
  3. Expert
  4. Master
  5. Grandmaster (most powerful)

During each level-up, player can upgrade an existing skills, or take Basic level of new skill.

There are skills with only numeric difference between levels. For example, Basic spirituality gives +20% power to Life Magic spells, Advanced spirituality gives +40%, Expert spirituality gives +60% etc.

Other skills can give a hero unique abilities when developed to certain level. For example, Grandmaster melee gives a hero an additional melee attack, Grandmaster necromancy allows raising vampires from slain enemies after battle, Advanced archery gives "Ignore obstacles" ability etc.

It's not easy to develop certain skill to highest level. Skills can depend on each other, and if you want to develop one skill, you often need to develop other skills first.
