Shifters, also known as Shifters of Might and Magic, was a roleplaying game developed, published, and released in 2002 by The 3DO Company for the PlayStation 2. It is a direct sequel to Warriors of Might and Magic's PlayStation 2 iteration.
In Shifters, you return as Alleron, who was previously the protagonist in Warriors of Might and Magic. He must defeat a horde of flesh and metal invaders that have begun to replace the villages with steam-powered cities. Unique to this installment, Alleron has gained the power to shapeshift, giving him the ability to assume the forms of 24 different creatures, including but not limited to a humanoid ram and a griffin.
During the course of the game, Alleron travels through six different worlds where he must do battle with members of specific races that call each of these worlds their home. These areas often, but not always, end in boss battles. Numerous secret areas can be accessed via using a particular form, such as areas blocked off by bars or grates that can be accessed as a Genie in its Gaseous Form. No matter what form(s) the player chooses to take, the main game is still always completable.
The reception of this game was mixed. GameInformer gave the game a 6.8 out of 10, GameZone gave it a 5.9 out of 10, PSX Nation gave the game a 5.0 out of 10. Each criticized the camera controls, the enemy AI and said that it was too easy. Game Vortex, however, noted that all enemies would attack at once making it somewhat difficult. Game Vortex overall gave the game a 60 out of 100 claiming the visuals where nice and that the game play was solid, but left much to be desired for.
