Might & Magic Heroes: Era of Chaos is a mobile game developed by Ubisoft Entertainment and released in 2017. It takes place on Enroth and revisits the storyline of Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia.

Lore[]

The main storyline follows the same beats as Heroes III: Erathia is besieged by its hostile neighbors following the assassination of King Gryphonheart by necromancer cultist Lord Haart. Gryphonheart's daughter Queen Catherine, recently returned from Enroth, must restore her country.

The geography of Antagarich incorporates locations from Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor such as Stone City and the Tularean Forest, and the Temple of Baa is mentioned. The Conflux faction now has its own homeland like the other factions, the island nation of Seram.

Some lore in unit and hero descriptions is suggestive of Ashan lore from Heroes V onwards, such as Cyclopes being said to be descended from demons, the Nagas being ruled by the Eternal Empress, the inhabitants of Av Lee being referred to as "Sylvan Elves", and Dark Elves having trafficked the Rampart hero Jenova in her childhood. The Dungeon's leader unit, Evil Sorceress, appears to be a Dark Elf, and its legendary unit is the Faceless. Dragonsteel, Dragon Blood Crystal, Starsilver and Shadowsteel exist as in-game resources.

In-game loading screens show the history of particular creatures as units in the Heroes series and enemies in the Might and Magic RPG series.

The factions and their unit lineups mostly correspond to Heroes III, but some units from Heroes II, Heroes IV and Heroes V have been added as well. Factions now have an Order/Chaos alignment in addition to their Good/Evil alignment, and abilities specifically meant to target or counter a particular "hated" faction. Alignment determines which of the game's stat-buffing Holy Emblems a faction's units can equip. Holy Emblems are divided into five groups, for Order, Goodness, Neutral, Chaos and Evil, and each unit can equip six emblems at a time.

Unit upgrades are called "Awakenings" and are accomplished by completing Awakening quests while using those units in battle, rather than by upgrading the structure that produces them. Each unit now also has two alternative Super Awakenings after the initial Awakening. As with Tribes of the East, the second alternative tends to have a grittier theme than the first. New faction heroes, Holy Emblems, faction units, unit abilities and Awakenings are added to the game through updates.

The November 2020 update introduced a tenth faction, the Cove, representing the Regnan Empire, based on the town from the fan-made expansion Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of The Abyss.

Each faction has eight tiers of standard units and a leader unit above that which, like heroes, bestows benefits to troops that are in the same formation as it. There are also legendary units for each faction who do likewise. Leader and legendary units do not have Awakenings and Super Awakenings.

Neutral creatures not associated with a faction include Rust Dragons, Faerie Dragons and Crystal Dragons who can be fought in the Dragon Utopia challenge mode, the Black Guard legendary unit representing a mercenary captain, and units representing Assassin's Creed characters who were added during a collaboration event. Gelu and Dracon's upgrade abilities now produce two aesthetically different types of Sharpshooter and Enchanter, depending on whether they were upgraded from a Marksman or Wood Elf, or Monk or Mage.
