The bonus of the Field marshal gives +10% to the attack of the hero's creatures.
The Field marshal is most likely to learn the Tactics and Scouting skills. All other skills can also be learned when leveling up, but have less chance of appearing for selection.
This is a useful bonus, essentially counting as another level in the Offense skill, which can be gained through Tactics.
The combination of Scouting and Tactics is also valuable on its own, giving the hero a hard-hitting, far-moving army.
