In the Heroes of Might and Magic series, the Experience is a measure of a hero's power. It is the main indicator of how well developed such a character is, and ultimately affects almost all of their stats.

Heroes of Might and Magic I[]
In Heroes of Might and Magic, growing the heroes plays a vital part in a successful strategy. However, the actions of gaining experience and developing the heroes have less importance than in any other game of the series, because heroes lack secondary skills and specialties.
Gaining experience[]
Heroes start with an initial number of Experience Points randomly assigned and ranging between 40 and 90.
The main way of gaining Experience is by winning combats. After each victorious combat, the hero gains an amount of Experience Points equal to the total hit points of the destroyed hostile creatures (i.e. one Experience Point for each Hit Point depleted). The only exception to this rule is made by Trolls and, respectively, Cyclopes. A victory over them awards a number of Experience Points multiplied by a coefficient of 1.25 and, respectively, 0.75.
When conquering a town or reporting a victory against an enemy hero, an additional quantity of 500 Experience Points are awarded (independent of the town's or hero's specs).
Other ways of obtaining Experience include visiting Gazebos or taking Treasure Chests.
Relationships between the experience and the level[]
The following table lists the Experience Points amounts needed to reach all the Hero Levels. After surpassing the 75th Level, a bug occurs and the true Level of the hero is not calculated correctly anymore. This is because the Experience is normally capped at 2^31-1 (approximately 4 bytes), and in a normal game the prospect of amassing this huge quantity of Experience is extremely unlikely.

Heroes of Might and Magic III[]
When a hero reaches certain set values of experience they "level up". At this point, one of their four primary skills increases by one, and they are offered a choice of one of two secondary skills.
The usual way to gain experience is through Combat. If a hero is victorious, at the end of combat, they'll receive 1 experience point for each Health of the creatures they've killed. Summoned Elementals and War Machines don't count. Resurrected creatures are only counted once, except Demons raised by Pit Lords. If there was an enemy hero present, the victor also gets 500 extra experience if the enemy hero didn't Retreat or Surrender.
A hero may gain 'free' experience by visiting a Learning Stone or a Dungeon town with a Battle Scholar Academy built. One can also 'pay' for experience at a Tree of Knowledge, an Altar of Sacrifice or by visiting Sirens. Treasure Chests give a choice of experience and Gold. Pandora's Boxes and Events might also give Experience.
