Devil

From the Might and Magic Wiki - Might and Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, King's Bounty

Devils are strong creatures higher in hierarchy than Demons. They are usually Kreegan, however, Devils have inhabited many planets and universes, so there are different kinds of Devils. Devils are usually one of the strongest opponents in most of Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic series games. In the world of Ashan, the Devils are the most powerful Demons. The children of the god Urgash.

Generally Devils seem to have teleportation abilities that are unique. They vanish by creating a screen of fire around them (either by dropping explosives on the ground or summoning flames around them) and materialise again in a burst of flames. Overall Devil population isn't big, but nobody can be sure when they have teleport abilities. Due to that they can also travel unseen, only leaving flames, or appear unexpectedly.

Devils are red skinned, tall, have sharp teeth and horns. Their feet and hands have four fingers with large black nails on them.

Devils in Heroes III are the strongest warriors of InfernoTowns and possibly rule them. They live in Forsaken Palaces, which are usually positioned in towns so that Devils that live there could see the whole town.

Devils are very useful when attempting to attack enemy towns because of its Teleport movement type - walls don't stop them from getting in. However, their teleport ability is rather limited - they can teleport only as far as their Speed statistic allows them to. As Devils are unupgraded creatures, their speed is rather low and thus they rarely get to reach anyone on their first move. Yet they are still very useful in long battles. Their ability to lower enemy luck statistic is overall useful. No retaliation makes them last longer and can be used for sneak attacks - wait one turn, teleport and hit and, when the next round starts, teleport back to safety. Hate to Angels is very useful when doing such sneak attacks as well, because Angels take 50% more damage and can not retaliate. When in a duel, a Devil defeats an Angel.

A good use of Devils would be to attack support or ranged troops; however, they have relatively low defense, so you will lose a lot of them once the whole enemy army piles up on them - unless you have more fast troops to draw enemy attention to.

Interestingly, Devils are never seen walking, even one step, when it would be easier to simply walk than to vanish and appear at almost the same place.

[edit] Description

Devils are Level four Death creatures that can freely teleport around the battlefield at will, summon ice demons, and resist Life creatures and magic.

[edit] Overview

Devils are the kings of the battlefield, able to hit any target at any time. Though they lack the striking power and immunities of their counterpart, the Bone Dragon, Devils are frightening in the hands of a skilled tactician, for they have infinite mobility and can call in their own reinforcements - one ice demon per devil in the unit. Their life ward can be helpful when the forces of Life seek to wreak some vengeance against these damned, but is quite a minor ability overall.

[edit] Comments

Devils are impossible to screen against, because they can instantly teleport to and attack from any unoccupied space on the battlefield. If you have a vulnerable caster hero or creature (and against Devils, they pretty much all are...), expect them to die early and often.

Probably the best way to use their summoned demons is to summon them after the first teleport-attack into the enemy's back row, so that the demons don't have to march across the field (a task that can take them three or four turns), and from there, let them take retaliation strikes for their masters.

In Heroes IV, Devils are a part of Necropolis, because there are no more Inferno towns. Probably not enough Kreegan survived the Reckoning to maintain their own town, and thus when Devils (and their relatives Imps) had to choose a town that is most friendly, they chose Necropolis.

Although Devils are never seen walking in the battlefield, but they do have that ability. When they are sent to travel on the map, they use their feet, probably to leave other creatures a chance to keep up, or to save their energy in long distance travelling.
