BasicBasic Combat increases the hero's Melee and Ranged Defense to 15. It is required to learn Advanced Melee, Advanced Archery, and Advanced Magic Resistance.
AdvancedAdvanced Combat increases the hero's Melee and Ranged Defense to 20. It is required to learn Master Melee, Master Archery, and Master Magic Resistance.
ExpertExpert Combat increases the hero's Melee and Ranged Defense to 30. It is required to learn Grandmaster Melee, Grandmaster Archery, and Grandmaster Magic Resistance.
MasterMaster Combat increases the hero's Melee and Ranged Defense to 40.
GrandmasterGrandmaster Combat increases the hero's Melee and Ranged Defense to 60.

DescriptionEdit

Combat is a might skill school relating to physical combat. The primary skill is Combat and the secondary skills are melee, archery, and magic resistance. All heroes are offered basic combat from level 3, except barbarians and archers, who start with the skill.

This is generally regarded as the most useful and important skill set in Heroes IV, due to the fact that the heroes can take damage directly in tactical combat. The only drawback is that it's slow to build up, and your heroes need to achieve a high enough level before you see the full effect of this skill.

For example, a level 25 hero with Grandmaster Combat, Melee, Archery, and Magic Resistance, can take out an entire army of 10 black dragons. They are also almost completely immune to magic and thus magic-based creatures like faerie dragons, mages, genies, and evil sorceresses cannot cast spells on them.

Some players like to build an army centered around these powerful combat heroes. Coupled with some other skills, you can have a very balanced army that can take on almost any army of any size with combat skills alone, and perhaps powerful magic to support them.
